Storage Virtualization

The IBM San Volume Controller is a state-of-the-art distributed disk subsystem that allows a single point of management for many of the key disk manufacturers. Because it uses one driver, systems can access existing disk subsystems as well as new technology as it enters the customer site. The IBM SVC connects to IBM Storage systems and OEM manufacturers like Hitachi, EMC, StorageTek, StorEdge, NetApp, and HP. It supports operating systems such as AIX, Windows, VMware, SUSE SLE, Red Hat, HP-UX, Solaris, Tru64, and OpenVMS.

This device is key to any tiered storage solution. It allows the storage administrator to move the clients disk from one subsystem to another without any system outage. Have you ever waited for hours while a disk pack formats? With SVC, disk is made immediately available without the need to reformat arrays for new hosts.

From a DR perspective, the San Volume Controller can perform advanced copy functions like Metro Mirror and Global Mirror which will keep your data mirrored across the street or across the country.
